But commercial carpet manufacturing begin in Nepal along with the exodus of Tibetan refugees in Nepal, in 1959. Thought Nepalese were weaving carpets for generation, Europeans through Swiss Association for technical Assistance (SATA) contributed in the development of the carpet industry in Nepal through financial and technical support to the Tibetan refugees. in the beginning it was started as a source of living for the Tebetan refugees and the products were just the item of tourist consumption. Gradually, it began to attract a consumer abord and initiated, in 1964, from the first commercial shipment to Europe, particularly Switzerland. Since then, it has transformed into a more value added, labour insentive commodity and remains the most important export product in Nepal by abysmal effort of enterpreneurs with international vision.

The quality of a carpet is measured first by the wool and foundation thread that is used in, and how compact the knots are. Fine cutting, and so on are also the important factors. Don't keep carpet in wet or moist condition. If you spill some liquid, dry it immediately Clean it with plain water. Don't use any Chemical or soap. Water doesn't damage the rug but let it dry. Do not keep it wet for long time. Keep it away from permanent stains. If the stains doesn't go then just give it to professional cleaner who does hand wash. It is recommended that you wash the rug at least once in a 4-5 years no matter whether it is clean or not. It will give a new life to your carpet.
